The power of personal brand in today’s dental industry — Dr. Brad Hughes | Vision Dental Partners

On today’s episode of The Small Business Show, Dr. Brad Hughes, founder and CEO of Vision Dental Partners, joins us to share his insights on growth, leadership, and building a thriving dental practice.

Vision Dental Partner is growing rapidly, with 10 practices across Indiana, South Carolina, and Florida. The company secured a spot on the 2025 Inc. 5000 list of Fastest-Growing Private Companies in America.

Hughes is a third-generation dentist. He was inspired to create his own dental practice by his father, whose reputation and community involvement made him well-known locally. Hughes wanted to follow in his footsteps, focusing on building meaningful connections within the communities he serves.

Hughes says the key to success is creating value and over-delivering. At his practice, the goal is to give each patient more in service value than they pay in monetary value. By prioritizing patients’ needs and building trust, the practice encourages timely treatments, ultimately saving patients time, money, and hassle.

Taking the time to build a personal brand is especially important in the dentistry space, which has become increasingly competitive. The key to building a recognizable and strong personal brand is authenticity. Hughes emphasizes that patients respond to genuine engagement, whether it’s sharing personal interests, community involvement, or simply showing they care.

"Create value and over-deliver, it really is just that simple in any business and in any industry. When we can do that—one patient at a time, every single day—we win."

Dentistry has become highly commoditized, with many practices focusing on revenue rather than authentic patient care. Hughes argues that the best practices differentiate themselves through strong personal branding and doctor-led leadership. Elite practices are led by doctors who continuously challenge themselves to improve, whether in charisma, patient communication, or deeper community involvement.

Hughes also stresses the importance of leadership within each practice. He believes doctors cannot outsource leadership to managers or consultants; the success of a practice begins with the doctor as the central leader. Those who embrace this responsibility build stronger teams, create better patient experiences, and achieve long-term growth.

Looking ahead, Hughes plans to continue expanding Vision Dental Partners while maintaining a focus on culture, leadership, and authentic patient care. He encourages like-minded dentists to connect with him for mentorship or potential partnership opportunities, emphasizing alignment in values as a key to success.
