Martha Lawrence on why servant leadership drives engaged, motivated teams

Leadership expert and author Martha Lawrence says small business leaders can boost performance and workplace culture by focusing on people, not just results. Drawing on the legacy of management pioneer Ken Blanchard, Lawrence explains that acknowledging employees and fostering trust are essential to sustainable success on the latest episode of The Small Business Show.

Lawrence’s latest book, Catch People Doing the Right Thing, illustrates how Blanchard built a global leadership philosophy despite having no formal business experience. She wrote the book to highlight the human side of leadership, showing how leaders can grow thriving companies while prioritizing respect, reconciliation, and servant leadership principles.

Central to Blanchard’s approach is the idea that employees perform best when they feel valued. Servant leadership reframes the leader’s role as supporting and enabling teams rather than commanding from above, with behavior and mindset taking precedence over titles or positional authority.

Applying these principles in remote or hybrid environments requires intentional engagement. Lawrence recommends regular one-on-one meetings and deliberate recognition to maintain trust and connection, ensuring praise remains meaningful even without in-person interaction.

Many leaders hesitate to acknowledge employee achievements out of fear of creating entitlement or financial expectations. Lawrence says transparency and honest communication can address these concerns while maintaining strong relationships. Recognition and a sense of connection, she notes, often matter as much to employees as financial rewards.

"Just be real. It's all about having that relationship and being close to your people... people want that more than money many times."

Simple habits can create immediate impact: leaders should highlight specific contributions, explain why the work mattered, and show the effect on the company or customers. Doing so counters natural negativity bias, reinforces desired behaviors, and strengthens morale.

For small business owners, Lawrence said consistency and authenticity are key. Leadership is not about control but about cultivating trust, fostering engagement, and creating an environment where employees feel valued. She notes that following Blanchard’s principles can improve retention, performance, and overall workplace satisfaction.
