The State of Business in Georgia and 3 Reasons to Start Yours Now – Tom Sullivan, U.S. Chamber

Small Businesses make up about 75 percent of all new jobs in the United States and they are what drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and initiative throughout the country. To facilitate this continued growth and success, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce plays a key role in organizing events, programs, and research to help entrepreneurs achieve their dreams. We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Tom Sullivan, Vice President of Small Business Policy at the U.S. Chamber.

The U.S. Chamber represents about three million businesses, the majority of which, are small. So, the Chamber really prides itself on analyzing how small business is doing across the country and then reporting those findings to the general public on a quarterly basis. In the latest index the Chamber, along with MetLife, shows a little bit of downturn. However, 65 percent of the businesses surveyed said they are optimistic about the direction their business is heading in. So, what are the biggest challenges facing small business today? Tom says it’s finding, hiring, and retaining talented employees. This isn’t a problem for Atlanta alone, Tom says this sentiment is echoed throughout the country.

Despite this, Tom assures us that it’s still a great time to start a business in the U.S. for a couple of different reasons. Between technology, a strong economy, and an overhaul of federal policy, small business owners are in an excellent position to succeed.
