Small businesses embrace AI to boost growth, not cut jobs

A growing number of small business owners are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to power growth and improve productivity, with many expecting it to create jobs rather than eliminate them, according to a new Goldman Sachs survey.

The 10,000 Small Businesses Voices survey found that 68% of small business owners are already using AI tools, and another 9% plan to adopt them within the next year. That marks a significant increase from 2023, when 51% reported using the technology.

Among those using AI, roughly 80% said the tools are helping their workforce rather than replacing it. Nearly 40% of small business owners using AI believe it will allow them to create new jobs in 2025. Additionally, 74% of AI adopters expect their businesses to grow next year, compared to just 65% of owners who have not adopted AI or are unsure about it.

The findings contrast with broader public concerns. A 2025 Pew Research Center study found that more than 60% of Americans believe AI will reduce job availability over the next two decades.

Small business owners report that AI is increasing efficiency and productivity, improving data-driven decision-making, and unlocking new capabilities. However, many still face hurdles. About 42% say they lack the resources and expertise to effectively implement AI tools, and 60% of those cite a shortage of knowledge about how to apply the technology to their business.

Even among adopters, nearly half say they struggle to choose the right tools. Concerns around data privacy, cybersecurity, and insufficient technical expertise remain widespread.

Workday and other industry leaders say AI is quickly becoming a competitive necessity, leveling the playing field between small firms and larger organizations. At the same time, firms such as EY warn that as AI adoption increases, businesses must prioritize risk assessment, regulation compliance, and ethical oversight to ensure long-term sustainability.

The survey results highlight a shift in how small businesses view AI: not as a threat to jobs, but as a means to drive innovation and long-term success.
