National Small Business Week (NSBW) began May 4 and runs through May 10, with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) leading the celebration through a virtual summit and events designed to empower entrepreneurs with tools and resources for success.

This year’s summit, held online May 6–7, will provide workshops, networking sessions, and expert panels to help small business owners navigate growth challenges. Registration and event details are available on the SBA’s official website.

National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins highlighted the observance in a recent message, reaffirming the IRS’s commitment to supporting small businesses, which she called “the backbone of the American economy.” She emphasized that small businesses fuel innovation, provide employment, and are essential to strong local communities.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS), a division of the IRS, offers a dedicated small business section on its website, providing guidance on employer identification numbers, disaster relief, tax filing obligations, and other essential topics. A newly updated Tax Tip on recordkeeping and a 2025 Tax Calendar are among the latest resources available to help business owners stay compliant and informed.

Collins notes that many small business owners remain unaware of key deductions and credits, which can lead to overpayment and competitive disadvantages. Her 2024 Annual Report to Congress urged the IRS to improve education efforts around small business tax benefits.

Nevertheless, she encourages the public to support local businesses not just during NSBW, year-round, by shopping, dining, and offering appreciation to entrepreneurs in their communities.
