How proactive leaders stay ahead of the competition

Too many business leaders manage their organizations from behind a desk, spending more time tracking past performance than shaping future strategy. According to Leadership Expert and LearnToLead President Dave Anderson, that disengaged approach is one of the quickest ways for an enterprise to fall behind.

On the latest episode of Lessons in Leadership, Anderson explores the ninth commandment in his ongoing series, 15 Commandments for Organizational Peak Performance, which he explains is “changing before you have to.”

Charting results vs. charting the course

Anderson highlights that a common trap for executives is prioritizing paperwork over people and operational metrics over hands-on direction. When leaders isolate themselves in office tasks instead of spending time in the trenches with their team, he believes that they lose visibility on emerging trends and internal friction.

"If you're spending more time with stuff than with people, you will always be late to change. You'll always be reacting."

Engaged leaders, by contrast, maintain a constant presence on the front lines. By staying close to daily operations and keeping a pulse on the market, they recognize shifts early and proactively adjust strategy long before circumstances force their hand.

Setting the pace vs. playing catch-up

According to Anderson, waiting until an organization is backed into a corner can create unnecessary urgency and limit strategic choices. When a company pivots only out of desperation, he says, it shifts into defense, where it’s playing catch-up while competitors capitalize on the disruption.

Proactive leaders, says Anderson, maintain an “attack mode.” By driving innovation and evolution while performance remains strong, they establish market dominance and widen the gap between themselves and their competitors.

The difference ultimately comes down to where a leader chooses to spend their time. High-performing organizations thrive because their leaders stay engaged, eliminate complacency, and execute changes on their own terms.
