Why embracing challenges can help entrepreneurs build stronger businesses

Welcome to another episode of Business Trends Today. During today’s discussion, we’re joined by Payam Zamani, Founder and CEO of One Planet Group and Author of the national bestselling memoir Crossing the Desert: The Power of Embracing Life’s Difficult Journeys.

Payam’s entrepreneurial journey is one of remarkable resilience. After fleeing Iran as a teenager and starting over in the United States, he built and lost a fortune during the dot-com era before rebuilding his career. Today, he’s here to share the lessons entrepreneurs can learn about overcoming setbacks, leading through uncertainty, and building businesses that last.

Embracing life’s challenges

According to Payam, Crossing the Desert was written three times and reflects three defining chapters of his life experience. Those main key points include:

  1. Growing up in Iran
  2. Immigrating to the U.S.
  3. Building his entrepreneurial career

He notes that each chapter of his book and life experiences taught him how to handle life’s challenges and truly “embrace them,” using them as pillars to build the foundation for future success. While entrepreneurs and business owners can use setbacks as opportunities to strengthen their resilience, Zamani encourages leaders to view challenges as part of a larger journey rather than permanent obstacles.

During the conversation, Zamani highlights his experience building AutoWeb from the ground up and taking the company public early in his career. While the dot-com crash resulted in a substantial financial loss, he believes that the experience provided valuable lessons.

While the venture ultimately crashed, Zamani praised the loss as it gave him the “foundations to build again and take advantage of this foundation that we call the United States.” He explains that whether business owners are facing success or failure, the U.S. allows entrepreneurs to keep growing and building.

“The American Dream is an invitation, not a guarantee.. The invitation to have access… that foundation, we all have access to… And I believe that those of us who have not seen the alternative elsewhere in the world, don’t appreciate it enough… It’s special what we have in this country.”

Leading through uncertainty

Shifting the focus from survival to core philosophy, Zamani introduces the concept of spiritual capitalism, which is the belief that purpose and profitability can and should work together. He points out that modern approaches to capitalism often reduce human beings to mere economic assets or tokens of transactional value.

In practice, spiritual capitalism means recognizing the deeper dignity of every individual. As Zamani notes, doing what is right shouldn’t just be about following regulations or avoiding legal trouble; it should stem from genuine values and respect for others.

  • Ethics Over Compliance: Leaders should anchor decisions in shared ethical values rather than doing the bare minimum required by law.
  • Valuing People: True business strength is built on viewing employees, partners, and customers as noble human beings, not just balance sheet metrics.
  • Heart-Led Leadership: Laws cannot force people to care about the environment, eradicate bias, or act with empathy—those qualities must come from within.

Closing out the conversation, Zamani argues that life and business move through continuous seasons, much like spring, summer, fall, and winter. For entrepreneurs, the temptation during periods of rapid growth is to get comfortable. However, Zamani cautions against complacency, noting that seasons of ease can quickly shift.

When difficult times inevitably strike, leaders shouldn’t despair. Instead, Zamani advises using those challenging windows to actively rebuild on a stronger foundation, preparing leaders for much better seasons ahead.
