ASBN was on-site at the 2025 U.S. Chamber of Commerce CO-100 Awards, where co-founder Bridget Fitzpatrick met Brandi Brown, founder of Gulf Spore, to discuss how her business is transforming the holistic healthcare and biotech industries.
Brown was inspired to launch Gulf Spore while working full-time in academia as a bioengineer and teacher, while juggling the responsibilities of raising two young children. Feeling burnt out and unfulfilled, she dreams of making a meaningful impact and began growing mushrooms at home in her garage.
"My dream is to empower the everyday person who may not know much about fungi or growing mushrooms to start their own mushroom business."
Today, Gulf Spore has grown into a multifaceted business. The company sells mushroom extracts, operates a commercial mushroom farm and has become America’s first mushroom farming franchise business.
Brown’s biggest challenge was scaling the business from her garage to a full commercial operation. Despite the hurdles, she emphasizes the importance of persevering and applying what you’ve learned to overcome them.
Her goal is to educate everyday individuals about the transformative power of mushrooms and to empower those seeking more from life by helping them start their own business through her franchise system.
