SBA awards $1.1M to support small manufacturers through Empower to Grow

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced $1.1 million in grants to three organizations to provide training and technical assistance for small manufacturers under its Empower to Grow (E2G) Program. The initiative supports the SBA’s Made in America Manufacturing initiative, which aims to restore American jobs, strengthen industry, and enhance national security.

The grants will help small manufacturers access free courses, hands-on training, and one-on-one consulting to enhance their operations, hiring practices, regulatory compliance, and competitiveness in government contracting. SBA administrator Kelley Loeffler said the funding provides targeted resources to help entrepreneurs expand their operations and rebuild U.S. industrial strength.

Grant recipients and regional focus:

  • Ohio State University – Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME): Serving six counties in Central Ohio, CDME will provide hands-on training for assemblers, inspectors, and machinists. Programs cover manual machining, 3D printing, welding, blueprint reading, CAM software, electrical schematics, and industrial automation.
  • Bluefield WV Economic Development Authority (BEDA) – Bluefield BUILD Initiative: Covering 16 counties in West Virginia, BEDA will strengthen the manufacturing talent pipeline through partnerships with Career & Technical Education programs, community colleges, and workforce development entities. Training will include manufacturing fundamentals, customized operator instruction, soft skills, and leadership development.
  • University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services (UT CIS): Serving Tennessee statewide, UT CIS will focus on rural, underserved, and economically distressed areas. The program will reach 150 individuals across 20–25 eligible businesses, offering workforce training, technical assistance, and process improvement services.

The grants aim to address skill gaps, enhance operational efficiency, and support small manufacturers in growing and remaining competitive. Manufacturers seeking more information about the program can visit the SBA’s Manufacturing Grants page or email e2g@sba.gov.
